3-Section Compact Extension Ladder

The Extension Ladder is a non-self-supporting portable ladder that is adjustable in length. It consists of two or more sections that travel in guides or brackets so arranged so as to permit length adjustment. It is intended for use by one person.

An extension ladder has several rungs that have a dual purpose – stand on and hold on. Ladder rungs are in a horizontal position attached to the side rails and are normally 12 inches apart. Every aluminium or fiberglass extension ladder is usually either a 20-footer or 40-footer with two sections attached to each other.

If it bothers you, just take the extensions apart, and use a single ladder. Or, you could tie them together or rig a 'lock' so that they absolutely won't come apart. ... Extend the ladder to the length you need and tie the top and bottom sections of ladder rungs together with good rope and good knots.

Extension ladders range in length from 16 feet to 40 feet. Extension ladders, also known as non-self-supported or leaning ladders should extend a minimum distance of 3 feet past the edge they rest against but not more than 4 feet.

Typically, the ladder is operated by a rope which is fastened to the bottom of the extending part of the ladder. The rope runs through a pulley at the top of the stationary part and back down to ground level for the operator to grasp.

When placing your ladder, remember the four-to-one rule: for every four feet of height you have to climb, move the base one foot away from the wall.

Set your ladder at the correct angle. Put your toes against the ladder's feet. Stand straight up and extend your arms. The palms of your hands should just reach the ladder's rung.
